Drum Workshop was founded in 1972 as a teaching studio by Don Lombardi. It originally offered private lessons and serves as an occasional workshop. Lombardi, along with student (and current Senior Executive Vice President) John Good, began a small drum equipment sales operation to cover the facility's operation costs.
This operation soon created the first-ever DW product: the height-adjustable trap seat, which was envisioned by Lombardi.
The demand became so great that they expanded into drum hardware manufacturing, where the legendary 5000 series pedal was born.

Product Overview
The Performance Series is handcrafted in the California Custom Shop. These custom-quality drums are now available with 100% Birch shells for a limited time. Birch is a favorite among studio drummers and engineers, striking the perfect balance between crisp articulation and warm tone. Suitable for many styles of music, Birch offers a sharp attack, short sustain, and balanced resonance. These Birch shells feature HVX (horizontal-vertical-diagonal) grain orientation that ensures versatility and a complete musical instrument. The tom and bass drum shells feature eight plies of Birch with 45- and 60-degree back cut bearing edges, while snare drums feature 10 plies with a 45-degree back cut edge. This series offers similar hardware features to the Collector's Series, including Suspended Tom Mounts (STM), quarter-sized turret lugs, and graduated triple-flange counter hoops. Performance Series bass drums offer matching Birch hoops and low-mass claw hooks, while all drums are equipped with TruePitch 30 tuning tension rods. This configuration features 8x10″ and 9x12″ mounted toms, 14x16″ floor tom, 18x22″ bass drum, and a matching 6.5x14″ snare drum as an optional add-on. *

"What if there was a travel kit that didn't sound like a travel kit?" What if that kit was just small enough to be travel-friendly, but also substantial enough to sound like a 'real' drum set should? After, literally, years of R&D and discussion, the sizes were agreed upon: a 12x20" bass drum with low-mass spurs and lightweight ratchet bass drum mount, an 11x14" floor tom, a traditional 8x12" rack tom with STM, and a matching 5x14" snare drum.
The kit also comes standard with True-Pitch® tension rods, MAG™ throw-off, True-Tone™ snare wires, and DW Heads by Remo®. - Hardware Color: Design Series™ drums are available exclusively in Chrome. This includes lugs, hoops, STM™, and tom legs. The Design Series turret lug is a scaled-down version of the famous round DW lug (a step smaller from Performance Series™).
- Graduated Counter Hoops: Design Series are available exclusively with Chrome Standard Triple Flange Hoops to give your drums a great versatile sound. Steel Triple Flange Hoops come in graduated weights (1.6mm for 8" toms).
- STM™ - Suspension Tom Mount: DW's patented STM™ (suspension tom mount) system allows drums to vibrate freely, allowing maximum resonance while securely holding the drum in place. Because there are no washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuning is as easy as ever. (U.S. Patent #5520083).
- True-Pitch® Tuning Rods: To give drummers even more control over their sound, DW created its patented True-Pitch® rod system. The rods feature 5mm threads rather than the 12/24 that's standard on most other drums. To compare, there is 1 thread every 0.8mm on DW's True-Pitch® rods (about 20% more threads), versus 1 thread every 1.05mm on most other drums. The result is a more exacting tuning process.

- Hardware Color: Design Series™ drums are available exclusively in Chrome. This includes lugs, hoops, STM™, and tom legs. The Design Series turret lug is a scaled-down version of the famous round DW lug (a step smaller from Performance Series™).
- Graduated Counter Hoops: Design Series are available exclusively with Chrome Standard Triple Flange Hoops to give your drums a great versatile sound. Steel Triple Flange Hoops come in graduated weights (1.6mm for 8" toms).
- STM™ - Suspension Tom Mount: DW's patented STM™ (suspension tom mount) system allows drums to vibrate freely, allowing maximum resonance while securely holding the drum in place. Because there are no washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuning is as easy as ever. (U.S. Patent #5520083).
- True-Pitch® Tuning Rods: To give drummers even more control over their sound, DW created its patented True-Pitch® rod system. The rods feature 5mm threads rather than the 12/24 that's standard on most other drums. To compare, there is 1 thread every 0.8mm on DW's True-Pitch® rods (about 20% more threads), versus 1 thread every 1.05mm on most other drums. The result is a more exacting tuning process.
