Drum Workshop was founded in 1972 as a teaching studio by Don Lombardi. It originally offered private lessons and serves as an occasional workshop. Lombardi, along with student (and current Senior Executive Vice President) John Good, began a small drum equipment sales operation to cover the facility's operation costs.
This operation soon created the first-ever DW product: the height-adjustable trap seat, which was envisioned by Lombardi.
The demand became so great that they expanded into drum hardware manufacturing, where the legendary 5000 series pedal was born.
Fast forward, DW is now the market leader in drums and is the most demanded drum by drummers, collectors, touring musicians and studios. The shell construction features DW's 333 design which creates alterations in grain direction which greatly influences the overall sound. In a VLT shell, the outermost and innermost plies run vertically, rather than a traditionally horizontal configuration. The vertical grain places less tension on the shell, thus allowing it to vibrate more freely, resulting in a lower fundamental pitch. From VLT technology, 333 was born. This 9-ply VLT evolution also has no reinforcement hoops and produces a lower overall tone while still maintaining maximum resonance and attack. 333™ shells are available only in DW Collector's Series Pure Maple Shells.
Macore is an African wood highly prized for its characteristic and relatively homogenous reddish coloring. The light reddish to reddish brown wood is faintly figured by dark late growth zones and is lightly striped on the radial surfaces, where decorative lustrous stripes can be seen. Although often straight-grained, the wood can also have a wavy grain or a double cross-grain.

Poplar Mahogany Shells
These drums feature 3-ply Poplar-Mahogany shells with 6-ply Maple reinforcement hoops. A thick 1/20" Poplar ply is sandwiched between two 1/36" plies of African Mahogany to recreate the thumpy tones and quick sustain.
Bearing Edge
These shells are cut with the same rounded “butter” bearing edge as the Classics Series with an outer round over and a 60-degree inner edge. This edge complements the lower fundamental tones of Mahogany and Poplar.
Of course, this Collector's Series snare drum comes with premium DW features like the True Hoops, Mag Throw-off, and 5P butt plate.

Pure Almond™ is the hardest wood currently offered in the California Custom Shop assortment, possessing a bright sonic personality in the same family as Pure Oak and Pure Purpleheart.
Handcrafted in DW’s California Custom Shop, the ground-breaking Pure Almond drums feature a new Staggered Tandem Core shell design that puts less tension on the shell and balances the inherent attack and brightness of the almond wood. Each hand timbre matched drum is finished in a distinct Toasted Almond to Natural Burst Lacquer Specialty finish.
The DW Collector's Pure Almond Snare in 14"x6" is made of almond wood and comes with Remo heads and chrome hardware. The lacquered Toasted Almond finish underlines the natural grain of the wood. Almond wood is very hard, which gives the shell a deep base note and a clear attack. The wood for DW's Almond Shells comes from old almond trees that no longer yield.

We've taken our custom drum-making know-how and created a line of drums designed to raise the bar yet again. Design Series™ is a DW kit through and through. From a newly-designed mini Turret lug, to Remo USA®-made Suede® "outline" logo heads and a sleek silver and white badge, its looks are fresh, yet decidedly DW. Also included are pro features such as STM™ (Suspension Tom Mounts), True-Pitch® Tuning, MAG™ throw-off, low-mass die cast claw hooks, and more. Last but certainly not least, there's the sound. These are thicker North American Maple shells that pack a punch. Incorporating HVLT™ (Vertical Low Timbre shell with a horizontal outer ply), Design Series™ shells are full, resonant, and responsive.
