Drum Workshop was founded in 1972 as a teaching studio by Don Lombardi. It originally offered private lessons and serves as an occasional workshop. Lombardi, along with student (and current Senior Executive Vice President) John Good, began a small drum equipment sales operation to cover the facility's operation costs.
This operation soon created the first-ever DW product: the height-adjustable trap seat, which was envisioned by Lombardi.
The demand became so great that they expanded into drum hardware manufacturing, where the legendary 5000 series pedal was born.
Fast forward, DW is now the market leader in drums and is the most demanded drum by drummers, collectors, touring musicians and studios. Macore is an African wood highly prized for its characteristic and relatively homogenous reddish coloring. The light reddish to reddish brown wood is faintly figured by dark late growth zones and is lightly striped on the radial surfaces, where decorative lustrous stripes can be seen. Although often straight-grained, the wood can also have a wavy grain or a double cross-grain.

Bearing Edge

We've taken our custom drum-making know-how and created a line of drums designed to raise the bar yet again. Design Series™ is a DW kit through and through. From a newly-designed mini Turret lug, to Remo USA®-made Suede® "outline" logo heads and a sleek silver and white badge, its looks are fresh, yet decidedly DW. Also included are pro features such as STM™ (Suspension Tom Mounts), True-Pitch® Tuning, MAG™ throw-off, low-mass die cast claw hooks, and more. Last but certainly not least, there's the sound. These are thicker North American Maple shells that pack a punch. Incorporating HVLT™ (Vertical Low Timbre shell with a horizontal outer ply), Design Series™ shells are full, resonant, and responsive.
