The shell construction features DW's 333 design which creates alterations in grain direction which greatly influences the overall sound. In a VLT shell, the outermost and innermost plies run vertically, rather than a traditionally horizontal configuration. The vertical grain places less tension on the shell, thus allowing it to vibrate more freely, resulting in a lower fundamental pitch. From VLT technology, 333 was born. This 9-ply VLT evolution also has no reinforcement hoops and produces a lower overall tone while still maintaining maximum resonance and attack. 333™ shells are available only in DW Collector's Series Pure Maple Shells.
Macore is an African wood highly prized for its characteristic and relatively homogenous reddish coloring. The light reddish to reddish brown wood is faintly figured by dark late growth zones and is lightly striped on the radial surfaces, where decorative lustrous stripes can be seen. Although often straight-grained, the wood can also have a wavy grain or a double cross-grain.
